Ember Marriage Retreats

Marriages usually begin fully ablaze. Yet as couples move through the seasons of life, the demands of everyday have a way of tamping down the intensity. Ember exists for the couples ready to rekindle that flame.

Why Ember

The fire doesn't have to dim.

Ember is a space to focus on your own marriage away from the daily demands and distractions — to become better together, no matter where you are on your journey.

Just as the most blazing fire will eventually be reduced to an ember, all marriages need to be rekindled. Job changes, children, relocations, aging parents, and empty nests have a way of tamping down the intensity over time.

That is the purpose of Ember.

The Ember Story

Read the rings

When a forester wants to understand a tree's life, he cuts a cross-section and reads the rings. Each ring is a year. Wide rings mark seasons of abundance: good rainfall, warm summers, plenty of light. Narrow rings tell a different story: drought, disease, years the tree had to fight simply to survive. Some years the rings are nearly impossible to see.

Your marriage has rings, too. If you could hold a cross-section of your marriage right now and trace it year by year, you would find them. The wide ones, full of closeness and growth. And the narrow ones. The job change that changed everything. The year you lost a parent. The season you were in the same house but miles apart. Those rings are not failures. They are the record of a marriage that has lived.

The question is never whether hard seasons will come. The question is whether you'll do the work to grow again.

We just want to be more intentional, more patient, demand less, listen more, and remember that we are for one another, just as Christ is for us.

Common Questions

Who is Ember for?

Ember is for any married couple that wants more — more connection, more depth, more of what marriage was meant to be. Whether your marriage is struggling under the weight of life's demands or simply needs rekindling, Ember meets you where you are. The only requirement is that both of you genuinely want to do the work.

What is the cost and what is included?

The retreat fee is $2,750 per couple and covers three nights' lodging at Rockwood Lodge, eight meals prepared by a legendary local chef, and all teaching and program materials for the weekend. As a ministry, the retreat's actual cost is heavily subsidized by generous donors who have attended past retreats and are paying it forward for couples like you.

Where is the retreat held?

Ember takes place at Rockwood Lodge in Highlands, North Carolina — a privately owned mountaintop estate with 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The setting is intentional. Away from the noise and pace of everyday life, Rockwood provides the kind of quiet and beauty that makes real conversation possible.

What is the approach at Ember?

Ember uses a marital framework that is both practical and powerful. At its core is a reintroduction — or for some, an initial introduction — to a Christ-centered marriage, and an understanding that a deep relationship with God is central to a healthy, thriving one. We also believe in practical skills and tools, and we encourage couples to read widely and apply good principles. But in our experience, the most lasting transformation comes when couples stop toughing it out and start turning their marriage truly over to God.

Is Ember marriage counseling?

Ember is not marriage counseling. It is marriage enrichment — a space designed for couples who want more out of their marriage, no matter where they are on their journey. Couples in deep crisis or with a history of severe discord, abuse, or talk of divorce need professional counseling. Ember is for couples who are serious about doing the intentional work to build a stronger marriage together.
